Virginia Di Mauro’s journey into photography began

as an intimate exploration of self-expression, an unexpected love affair that evolved into a lifelong passion. Hailing from the seaside city of Genoa, her work is deeply influenced by the city’s narrow streets, vibrant culture, and the voices of fishermen calling from the harbor. Each image she creates reflects an instinctive connection to the present, merging the energy of the moment with her subjects’ stories. Inspired by the bold elegance of Schiaparelli and the timeless artistry of masters like Roversi and Barbieri, her style is defined by movement, color, and an unyielding pursuit of creative freedom. Whether dreaming of a shoot amidst the vibrant landscapes of Latin America or finding beauty in the melodies of everyday life, Virginia’s vision is a celebration of emotion, individuality, and the art of living fully in the here and now.

The Genesis of a Vision

My relationship with photography blossomed unexpectedly—like a bittersweet love that matures over time. At 19, driven by a deep need for self-discovery, I decided to pick up a camera. I believed that by telling others' stories, I would also unravel pieces of my own. I wasn’t wrong. Each portrait I take inevitably captures a reflection of myself.

The Soul of a City

Genoa, my hometown, will always be my greatest muse. Its maritime spirit, multicultural vibrance, and unique identity inspire me deeply. The narrow streets leading to the sea, the aroma of salt air mingling with the scents of local life, and the voices of fishermen—all of it gives me serenity and sparks the creativity I crave.

Where would your ultimate photo shoot take place, and why?

Latin America. The people, the vivid colors, the music, and the raw beauty of its landscapes fascinate me. Its energy and culture are brimming with stories waiting to be told, and I feel it would be the perfect canvas for my work.

Fashion's Unapologetic Boldness

Which fashion brands resonate most with you, and why?

Schiaparelli stands out as a remarkable blend of elegance and audacity. The boldness in shapes, colors, and unconventional combinations feels close to my heart. It mirrors the risks I take and the extravagance I embrace in my creative process.

A Timeless Narrative

How would you describe your photography style, and how has it evolved?

If I were to define my style in two words, it would be movement and color. My perspective has evolved with my personal growth and life experiences. There hasn’t been one defining moment; every small encounter and experience has shaped my artistic voice.

What fuels your creative vision?

Inspiration is everywhere—in the social environments I navigate, the strangers I meet, the music from a car at a traffic light. Every moment carries creative potential. Photographically, I admire the mastery of light in Roversi’s work, the daring versatility of Harley Weir, the realism of Cass Bird, and the immortal elegance of Gianpaolo Barbieri’s images.

Do your photographs convey a specific theme or emotion?

My process is instinctive, almost entirely unplanned. I immerse myself in the energy of the moment, merging with my surroundings and subjects. My aim is to evoke timeless escape, raw emotion, and absolute freedom—a visual journey that transcends the constraints of time and space.

Fashion Destinations and Inspiration

What are your favorite shopping destinations, and why?

I’m not an avid shopper, but I treasure Milan for its balance of sophistication and accessibility. Its offerings in fashion, art, and architecture speak in harmony, creating a complete artistic dialogue. Milan isn’t just a city; it’s a universe of inspiration where every street and interaction feels like art.

Words to Live By

Is there a mantra that resonates with you?

Hic et Nunc—‘here and now.’ It’s a reminder to savor the present and make it extraordinary because this moment, as it exists now, will never come again.
