Transcending generations and cultures, it captures the spirit of refined hospitality and shared experience that defines the marque’s lifestyle offerings. Echoing the grandeur of a Rolls-Royce motor car’s arrival, the Chess Set is a ceremonious display of form, craftsmanship, and function — handcrafted using signature materials and offering multiple opportunities for personalisation.

Hidden Drawers

and Magnetised Pieces

Designed to express movement, the leather-clad base of the Chess Set gently rises from the center, mirroring the elegant lines of a Rolls-Royce motor car and appearing to float effortlessly. The board opens in a smooth, theatrical gesture to reveal a leather-lined holder that gradually elevates the magnetised pieces — a motion reminiscent of the iconic coach doors.

For a seamless playing experience, discreet magnets beneath the board ensure each piece glides with precision and remains perfectly aligned. After testing six different magnet types, the design team identified the ideal strength to balance secure placement with fluid motion. Additional queens are stored in hidden drawers on either side of the board, opened with a gentle touch.

Both the chessboard and the holder are framed with polished aluminium, featuring the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy emblem at the front and back. Each set is crafted by hand — from laser-cut veneer squares selected from the same log to ensure uniformity, to machine-milled aluminium grids refined by hand for precision.

The Chess Pieces: Sculptural Icons

Inspired by traditional profiles and reimagined with clean, faceted forms, each chess piece is sculpted into a monolithic design with a square base. Crafted from ceramic-coated aluminium with a jewel-like polished stainless-steel head, the pieces evoke the tactile weight and solid feel of the organ stops inside Rolls-Royce vehicles. Hidden magnets add to their functionality, while a satin finish distinguishes the black set, and an iridescent touch brings life to the white pieces.

Signature Materials from the Rolls-Royce Palette

The materials used mirror those found in Rolls-Royce interiors. The board is available in four veneer combinations — from high-gloss Blackwood and Ceramic White to open-pore finishes like Smoked Eucalyptus and Paldao — with grains arranged in a striking diamond pattern.

Clients can personalise the Chess Set with 13 Rolls-Royce leather colour options, tailoring the exterior and chess piece holder to match their personal taste or interior décor.
